My Favourites in Poitou-Charente
Wherever we are in the world we all want quality customer service, people with integrity who strive for excellence. The following are some of the people and businesses that I have had dealings with in Poitou-Charente over the last four years, who have all consistently outperformed and over-delivered on my already high expectations and demands
In the main they are local individuals and small enterprises, A mix of British and French, their emphasis in on high standards of workmanship, delivery and service. They are all customer focussed and incredibly responsive
I will add more as I come across them, I would appreciate your feedback as to your levels of satisfaction with them. I have not listed them in any particular order and I am listing them only because they merit listing. I hope that you will experience an equally high level of satisfaction
Meeting Health Needs in France
I consider myself an expert on disability and disability related issues. Usually once I have completed my initial assessments, I am able to find my way around the French system connecting with the relevant individuals and organisations, that enables my clients to resolve the difficulties that face them and their families
At times if I have run into cul-de-sacs with my research or there are additional complicating factors outside my sphere of knowledge I usually turn to one person for advice and guidance. This individual seems to know more about the whole French healthcare system and its workings than many of the French professionals I have worked with over the years
His name is Peter Owen, a regular contributor to various forums on health related issues, he is also a lead adviser on health matter on at least one of the bigger forums. He has written a guide Healthcare in France, A Guide for the Expatriate.
Most people coming to France will find this guide invaluable in assisting them to understand the way the health system works in France and how to get the best from it
Click here to contact Peter Owen
I personally find his style clear and unfussy, in all my contact with him he has been erudite and charming, helpful, diligent and never patronising. If you are unsure about how to meet the general healthcare needs of you or your family in France, I would recommend that you start by contacting Peter
His Guide will allow you to start to resolve health difficulties yourself. If you require additional medical insurance, make sure that you are getting the right one to suit your needs (one size doesn't fit all in France) contact Peter first
Curry in France
Many people moving to or visiting France report that food is an important factor, I find that people do like to chat about where thay have had an exceptional meal
I had heard about this 'excellent' curry from various friends and clients, but I grew up in London and before coming to France had spent four years working in Bradford, it surely couldn't compare to those curry's I had been spoilt with, how could it?
The first time we came across Popsy's Curry was at Aulnay market, my wife, a curry lover, suggested that we take some home. I now know how it could compare with those curry's I had previously been spoilt with
Obviously fresh ingredients, wonderfully spiced dishes, perfect rices, barji's, nans and all kinds of mouth watering side dishes. One word describes their food; DELICIOUS
Since that first time we had eaten Popsy's curry several times and can honestly say that we have never been disappointed. Recently we had family come to stay with us, we visited the market at St Jean D'Angely, Popsy and her husband were also there and we took a curry home with us. With no prompting from us our family all commented on how wonderful the food was
From experience I know how much work goes into preparing and serving food. I appreciate the long hours and how hard they have had to work to reach the level of quality that they have. But they still manage to do this and provide service with a smile and a kind word
The next time you want an exceptionally good curry, find Popsy at the markets she covers or call/email her to order and collect it from Popsy's place in Coivert (17330), you will not be disappointed

Fishing Fun
Close to where I live is a place to fish, not something I have done since I was a young teenager. Les Sources du Moulin de Migre is a safe, family friendly, fun day out
The Moulin de Migre is long established and run by a dynamic, considerate and warm person. Often assisted by her young children, which adds to the ambiance of the place
Fishing takes place along both banks of a 500 metre stretch of water. Fish are released twice a day, mainly trout but with other breeds as well. The site and its facilities, play area, bar, picnic area are situated in a beautiful rural setting. If you are interested in birds and particularly birds of prey you will not be disappointed with a visit here
Although not yet fully wheelchair accessible (it is planned to be during the next year)it does offer almost complete level access, including disabled toilets. It is certainly suitable for people with reduced mobility, and as long as one is prepared to negotiate, externally, an uneven stone surface in parts, wheelchair or not, you will have a great time there
The fishing is open from April to september on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and all French bank holidays.

Lights and Light Fittings
I literally stumbled across this gem of a shop whilst strolling around the old part of La Rochelle. I had been having difficulties finding suitable lighting for a part of my home, and despite numerous trips to the larger chain type stores, never quite found what I was looking for
Formes Et Lumieres 2000 can be found at
4 Rue Des Dames, 17000, La Rochelle. Telephone number: 0546 41 18 97
It is a smallish shop but packed with incredibly interesting lighting and light fittings. The range of stock is wide, well chosen and will meet the demands of all budgets.
The couple that own and run it are friendly, professional and among the most helpful shop owners that I have met in France
If like me you like to experience personal service from people that know about their area of trade, I can whole-heartedly recommend that you visit this lighting oasis

A Nice Fresh Cup of Tea
Sometimes when I am working in or visiting the old part of St Jean d'Angely I like to stop and have a fresh cup of tea. The only place that I would choose to do this is The Tea Rooms. Run by Sarah and her daughter Jessica, they will offer you quite possibly the best cup of tea that you will find in this part of France
Always friendly, always time to chat and offer insight, always a lovely cup of tea or other drink. They manage to offer a selection of British groceries, cards and tea sets in a setting that you may equate with a tea shop in Harrogate or Hastings
Reasonably priced with a mix of British and French clientele, Sarah and Jessica really do offer frendly, quality customer service with a fabulous outlook
Find them on your next visit to St Jean at
The Tea Rooms 11 Rue de la Grosse Horloge, 17400, St Jean d'Angely. Telephone: 0546 59 16 89

All Things Computers
When we had problems with our computer it was looked at by various friends and professionals, none of whom could save it without completely losing all the information on our hard drive (even then it was not sure that it would work again)
We called out Christian Frebutte, who not only visited us at home but repaired our computer and saved all the information in under three hours. It also works better than it ever had previously
We haven't had to call Christian out again, but have given his number to all of our friends who have had problems with their computers. Our friends, both British and French, have all reported excellent service and 100% satisfaction. He really is a computer wizard, polite, professional and a very nice person as well
Christian speaks excellent English and French (He is from Belgium) and, if possible, he will assist you to resolve your computer difficulties by talking you through it on the telephone, if it still requires a visit to your home he is prompt and reliable. I have no hesitation in recommending his services to anybody who is having problems with their computer
You can contact him by email - christian.frebutte@wanadoo.fr or telephone - 06 28 07 06 16
Cars
During our time in France we have had several trips to various garages, generally they have all been good. The one that we go back to out of preference now has always gone over and above our demands
Fitting CD players, tyres, repairs, advice and purchase of an additional car have all gone through this particular garage
Why? The owner has always been meticulous in listening to our requests and ensuring that any problems are resolved comprehensively. We trust his professionalism
Our experience has been one of complete satisfaction, if my wife has gone there she knows the owner has integrity and that he will not take advantage to try and earn extra money. It seems for him no problem is too complex or too small and he is also incredibly nice
If you have car issues I would recommend visiting him first at

Satellite and Terrestrial installations
When we purchased our home, there was a sky box and satellite connection already in place, it was somewhat precarious as the picture never seemed to be reliable, much to the dismay of the children, often in the middle of their favourite programmes
Friends of ours were about to arrive with their children to spend a week or so with us. The same morning we had problems with our Sky box reception again, only this time the whole thing was dead. We called Stuart from Alnay Electronique and we are so glad that we did
He arrived, as he said he would, later that same day. He had a van more like an electronic tardis with ladders. After checking our setup within the home he then had an inspection of our satellite dish high up on the roof
After playing around with some high tech gagets he then declared that all would be back to normal, only it wasn't...
He had reconfigured our whole connection setup so that the DVD, video and Sky box all interacted with each other without having to turn one off to use the other
He also ajusted the signal strength and reception signal so that our picture is better than ever, we have never lost it since. Most amazingly it cost us only 35 euros
I was so impressed with his impeccable service, reasonable prices and more importantly his friendly approach and professionalism that a short time later I posted a reply on one of the expat forums giving his details to someone who appeared to be having similar difficulties to us
We are about to install additional sky boxes in other parts of our home we have asked Stuart to do this for us, why would we ask anyone else?
If you are installing a new satellite system, upgrading your existing one or have any kind of query 'electronic' related, I would not hesitate to recommend Stuart of Alnay Electronique; professionalism, integrity and a really, really nice person. Contact him at;

Heating System Maintainance and a Chimney Sweep
Following a chimney fire in our home last year (small but still required the 'pompiers' to attend), we now ensure that ours are professionally swept at least once a year
Christophe Davaze came to our home at the time and date we'd requested. He was polite, professional and friendly throughout (even with our four children following him room to room). He proceeded to clean our three chimneys with meticulous attention to detail and he cleaned up after himself!
We had also arranged for him to visit neighbours of ours a week or so later to clean and service their oil fired central heating system. They were concerned as it had not been done for four years, they later reported to us that he was excellent with them, did a 'fabulous job' and was really reasonable with his price
I can report that for doing a first rate job for us (including a certificate for insurance purposes) the price was 80e. We have already booked him for next year
If You have chimneys to be swept, central heating systems to be serviced or repaired - be they gas, electric or oil, I can honestly reccommend that you give Christophe a call
